SWM Environment won the international tender for the National Privatisation of Solid Waste Management in December 1995 and was awarded the Concession for the Southern Region of Malaysia encompassing the States of Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan. After 15 years of operation via interim management agreement with 27 local authorities, the Concession Agreement was finally signed with the Federal Government upon the enforcement of the National Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 672 in September 2011.
Under its 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) banner, SWM Environment educates the public on the importance of recycling, proper recycling methods as well as where they can recycle; through talks and exhibitions held at schools, town halls, malls, office blocks and other public areas.
In 2018, SWM Environment launched its own incentive-based programme for recycling across the three southern states in Malaysia. Called KITARecycle, the programme encourages the public to recycle by rewarding them with Recycling Points (RP) for over 30 types of recyclable items which include paper, aluminium cans, plastics and e-waste. The collected RP could be cashed out via online banking or BOOST electronic money to shop with merchants that are available under the e-payment system. Please download the app via Google Play or Apple Store or visit www.kitarecycle.com for more information.
